Thoughts and Fiction in 2025

What’s coming in 2025: Star Wars, DC, Nintendo and more posts.

We’re six days into 2025 now, and I think it’s going to be a good year. I’ve surprised myself with how consistently I’ve been posting, usually once a week (when life events don’t get in the way), but I want to do a lot more in 2025.

I’m going to try to write at least a thousand words a day. Not all of it will be posted; some will be on politics and economics (which this site isn’t really for). But by uploading some of it, I think I’ll be more compelled to actually do it. Writing for this blog has already gotten me to do more. I might even start posting short stories here (I might have to ramp up to that). “Fiction” is one-half of the name, after all.

Either way, there will be a lot to write about. 2025 is going to be good for nerdom. All the big franchises I go on about (Star Wars, DC, Nintendo, etc.) are getting some big installments.

Star Wars

There’s almost never a year without a new Disney+ Star Wars show. So, to say that Star Wars is getting a big entry might be pushing it. But most Star Wars output has been pretty bad. The main exception is Andor, and in 2025, its second season will be airing.

When they first announced Andor years ago, I did not care. I just assumed it would be bad. Boy was I wrong. The show is great. It’s arguably the best Star Wars output since the original trilogy.

Season 2 will cover, to my understanding, the three or four years between Season 1 and Rogue One. The original plan was to have several seasons, spanning that time frame. But the showrunner, Tony Gilroy, didn’t want to commit a decade of his life to it (fair enough). So, season 2 will be the last season.

This gives me some pause for hesitation. It could end up feeling rushed. Still, I trust Tony Gilroy, and concision might improve it. I’m no fan of filler and great shows that go on for too long often become terrible. TV got better when it got shorter. Leave them wanting more, I say.

The season’s budget is apparently huge as well. That’s a good sign. Disney and Lucasfilm are going all in with Andor. Hopefully, they’ve realised that Andor is the kind of Star Wars content that they should be making. That would be a good development.

DC Superheroes

I’ve never really cared about Marvel Superheroes. But I’ve always loved DC. I suspect it’s the other way around for most people. But I grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series and the Justice League cartoon. They’re seared into my mind. I now know an unusually large amount of DC comics lore and practically no Marvel lore whatsoever.

Still, I will freely admit that over the lost two decades, Marvel’s movie output has been significantly better than DC’s movie output. But now, with the Marvel cinematic universe in its death throws, DC is finally getting it together.

James Gunn’s DC Cinematic Universe is starting this year. Actually, it’s already started. The animated show Creature Commandos is currently airing (and has retained some pre-James Gunn canon). I’ll probably write about it at some point, so for now, I’ll say it’s great.

Moreover, the new Superman movie will be released in July. I could not be more excited. I’ll be talking more about this as well. The trailer dropped a couple of weeks ago, and it might be the first Superman movie that’s ever gone full “comic book.” The stranger, fantastical, and perhaps sillier aspects of DC lore are usually excluded from DC films (to their detriment!). But this trailer had giant monsters, Krypto the super dog, Guy Gardiner…

It’s going to be great.

Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2 is almost guaranteed to launch this year. It hasn’t technically been announced, but the leaks are coming thick and fast. Some have come from third-party accessory companies (I imagine Nintendo is thrilled about that). We pretty much know what it’s going to look like. There will be an official announcement any day now.

I’ve talked about Switch 2 a lot in the past, and I’ll doubtless have more to say in future, so I’ll keep this brief. It is coming this year, and a new Nintendo console also means (if Nintendo wants it to succeed) a lot of new Nintendo games. Big games. In all likelihood, they’ll release a new 3D Mario (the Mario team must have been doing something since 2017).

The new games will definitely give this blog a lot of fan theory fuel.

Summary

All in all, it’s going to be a great year for nerdom! Or, at the very least, a great year for the franchises I like. I plan to do a lot more writing this year, and between Andor, Superman and Switch 2, I’ll have a lot to write about.

I hope y’all have a great year!
